Worshipful James Ellwood Morey

Worshipful Brother James Ellwood Morley, Soldier, Lawyer and The 52nd Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge #17. Born in Somers Township, Ohio on April 3rd 1845, Son of William & Derexa Morey, He worked on his Fathers farm until August 7th, 1862 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the union army, the 93rd Regiment Ohio Volunteers in response to President Lincoln's second call for 300,000 men. In the Fall of the same year he was taken prisoner, but was soon exchanged and again took his place in the ranks. He continued in the service until the 14th of June, 1865, when he was mustered out and honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. His most famous battle fought was “The Battle of Chickamauga. After returning home he graduated Miami University in 1867 then traveled to Indianapolis to study law at The Indianapolis Law College receiving his degree in 1868. Upon his return he practiced law and sold insurance for some time. In 1880 he formed a partnership with his Masonic Brothers, Henry Morey (Former Butler County Prosecutor & Ohio Congressman) and MWB Allen Andrews (PGM of Masons in Ohio) He served as Worshipful Master in 1892 He died in Hamilton, Ohio on June 29, 1914 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

Location

Situated at 724 High St on the main Hamilton Ohio corridor, The Hamilton Masonic Temple is home to the oldest Masonic lodge in Butler County. Founded in 1811 and fully chartered in 1812, the history of Washington Lodge traces its heritage to the very founding of Hamilton and Butler County.
