Worshipful Brother Colonel William Sheeley
Worshipful Brother Colonel William Sheeley- Veteran of The War of 1812, Former Director of The Butler County Infirmary, Former Butler County Sheriff 1831-1835 And the 38th Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge #17. He was born in 1790 in Washington County, New York. He traveled west in 1812 and was stationed at Fort Hamilton during the war of 1812 -1815. He was elected Sheriff in 1831. While in that capacity, he arrested Hamilton, Ohio's first murderer.
The first murder indictment issued in Hamilton went to William Summers, who was charged with murdering Isaac Wells on January 6, 1831. There’s not much existing information about the trial, but it must have resulted in a death sentence as Sheriff William Sheely, a gigantic but well-loved fellow, Many referred to him as having “Herculean Proportions” had the task of building a scaffold for Summers’s execution, but after building the thing, the sentence was commuted to life and his gallows went unused. One of the oldest residents of Butler County, died in September, 1859, at his residence near this city.
