Worshipful Brother Capt. Henry H. Wallace
Worshipful Brother Captain Henry H. Wallace, Soldier, Teacher, Former Butler County Recorder & Auditor, former clerk of Military pensions office in Washington DC, entrepreneur & Real Estate Agent and the 45th Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge #17. He was born on his family’s farm in Milford Township on September 30th, 1824 the son of John & Priscilla Wallace one of the first settlers of Milford, Township. In 1853 he was elected county recorder and held that office for six years. In 1859 he was elected auditor for the first time and held that office for two years. In 1862 he joined the Union Army as a Captain and served under Colonel John S. Crocker, in the war between the states. Upon returning home he began a carpet & wallpaper business for a few years before being elected county auditor for the second time in 1874, in 1883 he was appointed by President Chester Arthur as Clerk of Military Pensions, which he traveled to many regions of the country settling Veterans affairs. From 1886-1897 he was a successful Real Estate agent. He spent the last two years of his life in Detroit, Michigan at the home of his son Charles, he died in Detroit, Michigan on April 7th 1899 although the book “The Centennial history of Butler County” has his death dated 1901 but is not correct. He served as Worshipful Master in 1871-72 he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ohio
