WOrshipful Brother Dr. Alexander Proudfit

Worshipful Brother Alexander Proudfit Doctor, Educator, Trustee & Professor at Miami University. And 14th Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge #17 He was born in 1790 son of James Proudfit in Pennsylvania, he traveled to Ohio in 1814 to study medicine at Ohio University. In 1818 Alexander Proudfit, a student of Medicine, and a man of liberal education taught at a school on Heaton Street, in a house erected on lot No.203, by Dr. Daniel Millikin. In 1818, the Hamilton Literary society erected the old Masonic building at the corner of Third and Dayton streets. Privilege was granted Rev. Thomas McMechan and Henry Baker the lower story for school purposes. The last recorded record of WB Proudfit was around 1838. He served as Worshipful Master of our lodge in 1821-22. Little is known of what happened to him or where he is interred. 


Location

Situated at 724 High St on the main Hamilton Ohio corridor, The Hamilton Masonic Temple is home to the oldest Masonic lodge in Butler County. Founded in 1811 and fully chartered in 1812, the history of Washington Lodge traces its heritage to the very founding of Hamilton and Butler County.
